To the Editor:
My brother and I were exclaiming one morning about the magnificent sum of money the Eatonville Relay For Life raised -beating previous records - and marveled at the amount of work and dedication it took to organize such an achievement! Then we thought about the sums other organizations and communities raised and realized all together it was quite a hefty sum!
We wondered what kind of a report the recipients made for the distribution of this money - a kind of pie chart showing how much for actual studies and how much for office costs and salaries of people involved.
This "pie chart" may exist, but we have not seen one and perhaps others have not either. Would it be possible to find out this information and publish it for all to see?

The Dispatch relayed this question to Tiffany Salesky, Community Relationship Manager for the Great West Division, Inc., who was the ACS liaison to this year's Relay for Life team and who was present in Eatonville for the relay. She responded with the following information:
First, the American Cancer Society is the largest private nonprofit funder of cancer research, $100+ million annually. In Washington alone we funded eighteen grants totalling $5,129,500 in 2007.
In 2006, Relay For Life in our 12-state division raised over $29 million dollars and nationally it raised over $400 million.
These funds are distributed into three basic categories:
35% of every dollar is distributed to Research;
44% of every dollar is distributed to Quality of Life Programs such as Road To Recovery, Reach To Recovery, Look Good... Feel Better and Cancer Resource Centers;
21% of every dollar is invested back into the American Cancer Society to fight cancer 24/7 with programs such as hotlines at 1-800-ACS-2345 and www.cancer.org; advocacy (e.g. celebration on the hill); new tools (online donating, volunteer training); and staff help.
Salesky also gave an update on the amount Eatonville raised as of last Friday, July 20: $85,688!
Tiffany Salesky is at 1313 Broadway, Suite 100, Tacoma, WA 98402; 253-272-5767 or 800-729-3880; or tiffany.salesky@cancer.org.
Correction to 7-18-01 Relay story:
"Walk-n-rollers" was the name of one team, not "Rock -n-Rollers."
Sharline Charaba was the runner-up for the most individual donations raised. Our apologies for the errors.
