A stronger, more aware community

First, I would like to thank the town leadership for the opportunity to serve as Eatonville’s chief of police. This is but another chapter in the partnership between the Eatonville Police Department and the Pierce County Sheriff Department.
The Eatonville Police Department has initiated and/or resolved 88 calls between July 14 and July 28. Upcoming events include:
1. Eatonville Arts Festival on Aug. 1-3 at Glacier Park.
2. National Night Out. “America’s Night Out Against Crime” happens on Aug. 5 this year. Since 1984, the National Association of Town Watch has sponsored this nationwide initiative, whose focus is to promote safer communities through police-community partnerships and cohesive neighborhoods. We do not have a formal event this year, but ask our citizens to take this night to meet your neighbors and exchange contact information. This is the first important step to building a stronger, more aware neighborhood.
We are asking for your help in making sure everyone has a safe summer. We have many children, families, athletes and tourists enjoying our parks, trails, sports fields and businesses while walking. We are asking our drivers to please slow down while in town and our pedestrians to please look both ways for vehicles before crossing any roadway, using crosswalks when available.

Jim Heishman is Eatonville’s police chief and a lieutenant in the Pierce County Sheriff Department.
