Breaunna Fontenette of Bethel sprinted her way to a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter event in the 4A state high school track championships last Saturday.
Fontenette finished in 25.32 seconds. The winner was Hannah Cunliffe, a South Puget Sound League rival from Federal Way, who streaked across the finish line in 24.66 seconds.
Cunliffe, who also captured the 100-meter crown, helped drive the Eagles to the team championship. She’ll be running for the University of Texas beginning next year.
Federal Way won the team title in the boys’ competition last weekend, too, becoming only the second school in the meet’s history to capture both in one year..
One other competitor from the Bethel School District was a top-eight finisher in the three-day meet held at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Qiana Lawrence of Spanaway Lake was sixth in the shot put at 38 feet 4 inches. The winner was Audrey Ward-El of Skyview, who easily topped the field at 45 feet 1 inch.
