Catholic churches in Eatonville and the Graham area joined fellow Catholics around the world in marking the selection of a new pope last week.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a former archbishop from Argentina, was announced March 13 as Pope Francis.
At Our Lady of Good Counsel in Eatonville and Holy Disciples Catholic Church near South Hill, members “offered prayers and celebrated Masses for the election of a pope and the beginning of his ministry,” said Rev. Matthew O’Leary, who heads both churches. “And, of course, we have shared hopes and had lots of excited conversation about this extraordinary new example of a pope.”
Our Lady of Good Counsel, with a membership of about 140 households, is a mission of Holy Disciples. The latter, founded in 1996, counts nearly 1,100 households among its membership.
