De Marco Best, a parent in the Bethel School District, has been elected as Washington State PTA’s Region 5 director.
Best’s one-year term began June 1. As a region director, he is responsible for holding PTA officers’ leadership workshops and providing support for their councils and local units in the region that includes southeast Pierce County and the Enumclaw School District in King County He will also serve on the state PTA Board of Directors. “My number one focus is to get PTA leaders trained and to continue strategies the previous region director implemented to ensure our local units are running smoothly,” said Best. “I would also like to get information disseminated about what PTAs can do on the legislative level.” Best has served as local unit president, vice president, treasurer and legislative chairman for the PTA at Thompson Elementary School. At the council level, he served as president, vice president, treasurer and legislative chair of Bethel Area PTA Council. He also has been a state PTA representative at the National PTA Emerging Minority Leaders Conference. Best works as a flight simulator engineer for Alaska Airlines and is the company’s chairman of the Black Employee Resource Group. In addition, he volunteers with Habitat For Humanity in Tacoma.
